Another week passes, and now we're very much into the part of Christmas where the sane among us can start thinking about getting festive – having not spent every day since mid November wasting any of that spirit!
The race last weekend went pretty well. We did better than we'd have expected at the beginning, but similarly there was an opportunity for a surprise win that we didn't manage to take. We're not in the running for the championship this year, so pulling off those individual results when they come along would be great. There's another few rounds left in the season so we'll give it a good go.
Work wise I've spent a lot of the week in debates with colleagues. We get along great overall, and have done some really important work over the past 6 months, but there are always going to be some foundational differences between me and a lot of other developers. I'm hyper-focused on Getting Shit Done™, and sometimes that does come with a (in my opinion healthy) amount of Put That On The Later List™ that people who develop for the sake of developing can't get on board with. I was chatting with someone recently about how the best people at most careers are the ones who can communicate the best with those around them, and in a lot of ways I tick those boxes: I can communicate effectively with stakeholders like business owners, marketers or clients because I've been those people. But I'm struggling to communicate effectively with other developers when we have different ways of thinking, so that's definitely something to work hard on.
Today started ridiculously, by attending the daily standup to some confused colleagues who had remembered better than I had that I was meant to be off today 😂 I had taken the day off for this afternoons activities, but don't really need the whole day, so just carried on working.
That afternoon activity is to head off to see Santa in Bewl Water, which kid doesn't know about yet. We'll go and get her in the car from school and head straight off and get Christmas off to it's proper start. Maybe I'll even wrap some presents later, but it's still a bit early...
